Ivan Peries
Ivan Peries (31 July 1921 – 13 February 1988) was a distinguished Sri Lankan painter and a founding member of the Colombo '43 Group, an avant-garde collective that significantly influenced the trajectory of modern art in Sri Lanka. Born in Dehiwala, a suburb south of Colombo, Peries was the son of Dr. James Francis Peries, who had studied medicine in Scotland, and Ann Gertrude Winifred Jayasuria, a graduate of St. Bridget's Convent in Colombo. His elder brother, Lester James Peries, became a renowned film director. The Peries family was Roman Catholic and had become anglicized, with Ivan fluent in English from childhood.
